August, 2010: The following crash-mail covers were sold at an auction in Hong Kong.
Item 1955: The “City of Karthoum” Crash, 1935 (Dec.), envelope from the U.K. to a Royal Navy officer aboard the the H.M.S. “Tamar” at Hong Kong (19.1.36) showing on reverse Hong Kong “Officially Sealed” label, tied by “Received/Damaged at Hong Kong” framed h.s. and “Victoria/Hong Kong” c.d.s., adhesives floated off, customary disaster faults, fine usage.

Item 1956: Flying Boat “Scipio” Crash : 1936 (13. Aug.) registered airmail envelope from Hong Kong to England bearing 20c. and 50c. , cancelled by “Hong Kong/Air (R) Mail” c.d.s., showing unframed “Damaged by – ['Sea' deleted] Water” h.s. in violet (this h.s., per Webb, found on registered mail) and on reverse brown Great Britain “Officialy Sealed” tape, cancellled by “Ashford, Kent” c.d.s. Item 1958: 1937 (Nov.) airmail envelope from Hong Kong to England, showing framed “Damaged by/Sea Water/in Airplane/Accident” h.s. in violet, with portion of Hong Kong origin c.d.s. (adhesives floated off), light central creases, fine. Webb No. 67. Ex Lee Scamp.

Item 1959: Flying Boat “Portland” Crash: 1947 (18. Aug.) registered airmail envelope from Hong Kong to London, showing framed “Damaged by Sea-Water” h.s. in violet and on reverse British “Officially Sealed” label and “Hong Kong/Registered” origin c.d.s., with partial Hong Kong c.d.s. (adhesive floated off) on front, along with K.G.VI $1 from this mailing that did not originate on the envelope, minor water staining, fine. Webb No. 127.

Item 1960: 1947 (Aug.) long airmail emve;p[e addressed from Shanghai, but apparently posted in Hong kong, to New York, showing framed “Damaged by/Sea Water” h.s. in violet and partial Hong Kong origin c.d.s. (adhesive floated off), also showing “By Air to Office of Exchange Only” instructional h.s. in purple, peripheral fualts and damage. Webb No. 127.

Item 1961: 1947 (Aug.) airmail envelope from Hong Kong to Marseille, France (28.8.), showing “Retardé/par suite d’Accident/d’Aviation” framed h.s. (applied on French destination mail from the “Portland” crash), with partial Hong Kong origin c.d.s. (adhesive floated off) and “Par Avion de Hong Kong à Marseille” h.s. in violet alongside, fine. Item 1962: “Comet” Crash near Calcutta : 1953 (30 Apr.) 40 c. aerogram from Hong Kong to England, showing “Salvaged Mail/’Comet’ Crash, Near Calcutta/2nd. May 1953″ h.s. in violet, fine. Webb No. 145.
The BOAC Comet aircraft crashed some six minutes after takeoff from Calcutta, en route from Hong Kong to England, after entering a violent thunderstorm, with a loss of all 43 persons on board.

Item 1964: 1953 (30 Apr.) airmail envelope from Hong Kong to London bearing uncancelled K.G.VI $1 (which probably did not originate on the envelope), showing another type of “Salvaged Mail/’Comet’ Crash, Near Caclutta/2nd. May 1953″ h.s. in violet, envelope damaged at right and crumpled. Webb No. 145.
